Interior Architecture. The Division of Interior Architecture houses the major in interior architecture that evolved from interior design, home economics in business and ultimately from domestic science. The majors complete a rigorous portfolio-based academic program, which is nationally accredited by the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER). Only 30% of design programs nationally are accredited by FIDER. The program is also accredited by the National Association of Schools of art and Design.

Graduates are employed with the architectural firms and corporate offices; job placement rate is 90% in the field including several international firms such as Perkins and Will, Marshall Erdmann Associates, Smart Associates, Interior Systems, and Schafers.

Graduates who take the national exam pass at the 90% rate. Students' work is placed in several juried competitions where the projects consistently outscore those of other campuses. In April 2000, an IA student, Clare Wei, placed 2nd out of 150 students representing Midwest universities at the Steelcase Competition.

There are about 145 majors with about 30 graduating each year.

Interior architecture occupies over 10,000 square feet of the CPS Building and houses a nationally recognized dedicated lighting lab, as well as dedicated computing labs. Student, alumni, and guest artists' work are featured in the Agnes Jones Gallery year round.

The interior architecture program emphasizes an international focus; a greater percentage of IA students study abroad than almost any other UWSP major. Almost 50% of the May 1999 graduating class had an international study program experience. IA faculty lead overseas study tours yearly. Summer 2000 faculty led study tours in architecture, landscape and garden design to Italy and China. Summer 2001 tours were in and in 2002 study tours are inTBDSeveral IA graduates were on the design team that created the Moscow McDonalds.

UWSP students have placed within the top three awards for the IIDA/Steelcase Midwest Competition competing with major schools such as Iowa State, University of Minnesota, and UW-Madison. One year, the UWSP students took both first and second place. In 2001, two UWSP students won the International Design Exhibit at the Regional level (7 states and 3 Canadian provinces.

The Fall 2001 IA 411 studio project for the semester culminated with student presentations being given to the Jonesboro Arkansas Architectural Firm, Stuck and Associates who hold the contract with the Arkansas Game and Fish for the design of a regional game center. Students used the distance classroom in Room 104.

Jessica Miesbauer, an August 2001 graduate who served as Student Representative to the Board (SRB) for the Wisconsin Chapter ASID for the 2000-01 academic year now serves on the NATIONAL STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL for ASID (the American Society of Interior Designers). This will involve participation on the Student Advisory Council, coordinated by the National Headquarters of ASID in Washington, DC. Ms. Miesbauer attends meetings in New York City and Washington, DC, at which she assists in developing the national positions and agenda for ASID in regards to student- and education-related issues. She is one of two students nationally. Jessica was also selected as the SRB of the YEAR nationally.
Faculty members are highly involved in professional organizations.

Faculty member Patricia Kluetz was elected in 2000 to preside over the national Design Communication Association. Another faculty member is the President-Elect for the International Interior Design Association for Wisconsin. As an editor for the national organization of Architectural Illustrators Society, Mark Nelson also encourages UWSP student involvement in national conferences.

Awards are another strength of the faculty. Mark Nelson, received an Award of Merit in the 14th Annual Architecture in Perspective International Architectural Illustration Competition. Tom Brown received the First Place National Energy Value 2000 Gold Award from the National Association of Home Builders Research Center (NAHBRC), Innovative/Advanced Category-Cold Climate Region.

Quite a record was attained late November when five faculty members in the Division of Interior Architecture received notification from the Interior Design Educators Council that their presentation proposals were accepted for the 2002 New Mexico national professional meeting. Nationally, about half of submitted proposals are accepted. UWSP had 100%. Faculty members involved are Christina Burton, Jane Kangas, Mark Nelson, Kathe Stumpf, and Donna Zimmerman.
