Nutritional Science.

Dietetics Bachelors and Nutritional Science Masters. The Dietetics major prepares students for a wide variety of careers as registered dietitians after students pass the national exam. In 2000-2001, 100% of our students passed the national exam to become registered dietitians. Eight students passed the American Dietetics Association exam with scores 90% higher than the national average. Over the past five years, 46/49 or 94% of our dietetics majors passed the national exam on their first try. In the last testing, our students scored 9% above the national average.

Another measure of quality for dietetics programs is graduates' ability to win placement in one of the 40 or so national internship programs; the national average for placement is 52% and in 1999, our dietetics program enjoyed an 87% success rate and in 2000 we saw 100% success rate. Two dietetics majors applied for fall 2001 internships and both have been accepted, for a 100% acceptance rate. Jenny Kelling was placed at Harper Hospital, Detroit, MI and Lori Rees was placed at Hurley Medical Center, Flint, MI. The national average placement is 52% for the year. In addition 100% of the junior level students who applied for paid foodservice summer internships were accepted in such prestigious places as Washington State and Duke University. 1999-2000 opened with the new $135,000+ foods lab for dietetics majors, and in 2001, a $80,000 renovation was completed in the cafeteria foods lab.

There are about 60 majors and 20 graduating each year.

We also offer a master's degree in Nutritional Science that is being completely revised for fall 2002. The new masters will offer a 12 month + thesis option. The masters has not accepted any students for two years while the curriculum was revised; we expect 15 new students fall 2002.
