ennifer Lundwall graduates with a bachelors in dietetics May 2002. A high school basic food course in Port Washington, WI (north of Milwaukee) convinced her that she wanted to find a career in foods. Finding that she just loved learning about foods made finding dietetics at UWSP an easy route. Besides, her mother was a school nutritionist coordinating the school lunch program.
Jen describes herself as outgoing, positive, confident and a person who loves to laugh. She wants to be successful in her career, enjoy life and be the mother of a boy and a girl eventually.
She says, Dietetics is much harder than one would think and you have to be very determined to stay on track because the national internships which are required to become a registered dietician are very competitive. You cant slack off even one semester. She notes that dietetics majors take 4 chemistry and 4 biology and many nutrition science courses. In fact, they are only one course short of a pre-med science curriculum. If she had known that so much science was required, she might have had second thoughts about going into dietetics, but now, she has finished all of the science courses.
A class project she loved was designing a restaurant from equipment to tablecloths. It was a soup and sandwich shop theoretically in Chicago.
The future of dietetics is huge. With baby boomers beginning to need more attention and teens that more overweight than ever, the job of a dietician will be even more recognized as a serious health professional.
She looks forward to working as community nutrition counselor at a WIC program for a couple of years and then considering going for the national internship and certification as a registered dietician.
isa Hilker is a senior dietetics major graduating in December 2002. One of two children, she grew up in Green Bay, WI where she noticed early on her interest in understanding and memorizing food labels. That and her love of human science led her to the study of dietetics.
Lisa is a "people person" who loves to smile, is goal-oriented and very organized. After graduation, she hopes to land one of the national internships and then work toward a master's degree. She sees herself working in a clinical setting in a large city hospital, perhaps working with ill children.
Lisa believes that dietetics will become even more important in the future, as people learn that foods can be used for the prevention and control of diseases.
Here at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, she admires the faculty, their experiences and confidence. They are good role models for their students.
