A celebration of 100 years of dynamic change in Home Economics

Picturehe Centennial Celebration was held September 20 and 21st, 2002.

The Reception and social drew about 80 alums and faculty members in the Founder's room in Old Main. Socializing and a drawing of UWSP items were the main events.
The Event. The next day, Saturday, brought about 170 alums and current and former faculty to the University Center. In the opening session, the mistress of ceremonies, Laurel Hoeth '69, welcomed various classes and former faculty. Karen Bogenschneider '72 gave the keynote address showing the history and trends in home economics programs. Groups at tables also discussed memories of their home economics programs and what that education meant to them.

Participants took a walking or bus tour through campus and to the College of Professional Studies Building or visited the extensive display area in the University Center. One display included china/crystal/silver used in the home management house for formal dinners

There was a display for the centennial endowment. There were 6 tables of silent auction items, most from the college collection of home economics items and some donated pieces.

The quilt display featured quilts made by Lynn Gilles(retired faculty), Faith Pomerening Wilde(1956), Rose Barbian Cobb(1961), Ethel Florence Christenson(1934), and the mother of Margaret Bolander Baker(1979).

Lunch was served from 11:30-12:30. During lunch, Doris See '49 gave a speech on behalf of alums.

A new videotape was unveiled that captured 10 decades of the nation and UWSP home economics. The tape can be purchased for $10.00.

The silent auction concluded with most of the 98 items sold. The chancellor played both jazz and traditional versions of the school song on the piano, while champagne was poured and candles lit. And we toasted both the first and the second 100 years

Students from the 3 program areas introduced the Centennial Endowment goal of $1 million, announced gifts/pledges of $200,000, and the 7 leadership donors. They unveiled a large medal plaque, a tree with leaves to honor leadership givers of $10,000+.
They also spoke about the centennial garden and the plan to thank $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 donors with engraved bricks in the garden.
