Susan (Buhrandt) Simons: Fashion Merchandising Class of 1988

"Mary Ann Baird was my advisor. While I was a student at Stevens Point, my group suggested changes in the program that would make it more practical. Mary Ann suggested that we do an independent study with her. We surveyed the requirements of other campuses' programs, wrote a paper and a proposal. Mary Ann was very supportive of us but some faculty members were not. However, the faculty took all of our suggestions and made changes to the program as a result of our work."

"The program had a focus on the individual, with small classes and a lot of group projects where you learned to work together. UWSP has a very good reputation. It did a good job preparing me to find work in fashion merchandising. I worked in the Dallas Neiman Marcus shoe department, and then moved to Minneapolis and I now live in the Milwaukee area where my husband runs his own chiropractic clinic. While I was a student at UWSP, my roommate and I were in an accident involving a drunk driver. My roommate was killed. I am very involved in writing now and an article I wrote on the "Victim Impact Panels" will appear in the Milwaukee Magazine, probably in the spring of 2002. I give talks at these panels every month where we talk to people who have been arrested for drunk driving."
