Mary Zurawski: M.A. in Home Economics Education Class of 1970

"Doris Davis is a very special person. Also Fern Horn. Doris kind of followed Fern around. She was teaching home economics at a high school that I went to, and then she was one of my professors at Stout, and then again at Stevens Point while I was here for my master's degree. She was my advisor and role model. Doris was a self-actualized person who was truly interested in others. She was 'right with herself in the world'."

Sue (Mertens) Arnold: Home Economics Education Class of 1972

"I went to UWSP because it had a reputation for having a teaching emphasis and that is what I wanted. I feel that I was well prepared for my teaching career, although I only had six weeks of student teaching. I'm glad that students today get a full semester. I have stayed in home economics teaching all my life and currently teach mostly sewing classes at Pius High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin."
Liz Hoover: Home Economics General Class of 1972

"I came to Stevens Point because I liked the family atmosphere of the campus. My family used to drive through Stevens Point on the way to my grandma's house and we would stop at the Hot Fish Shop to eat. I felt like I knew the place."

"Orthula Doescher was the manager when I lived in the home management house and she used to plant paper punch dots around the house to make sure we were cleaning everything."

"Even though I only worked in the home economics field for a short period of time, I have used the skills I learned in all of my occupations, especially managing the family laundry/dry cleaning business."

Mary Heisler: Home Economics Education Class of 1975

"I have worked as an Extension county home economist for thirty-four years in Michigan, Portage County, and Fond du Lac County, retiring twelve years ago. I remain active in Epsilon Sigma Phi and am treasurer this year. I received my bachelor's degree from Stout and my master's degree from Stevens Point. I decided to get my masters degree because while I was working in Fond du Lac County it was being encouraged to do so. I had taken courses through Madison but when it came time to go to school, Stevens Point was closer and I already knew Fern Horn. I was married at the time and I lived in Stevens Point Mondays through Thursdays. I recall that as a non-traditional student I got along very well with the faculty. I recall the faculty quite fondly. I also had an easier time thinking of projects to do because of my practical experience. I have stayed in the profession all my life as a home economist."

Jan (Gray) Albertson: Home Economics-Business Class of 1978

"I was enrolled for two years at the Art Institute of Chicago when my husband was in the war. I was taking classes in industrial design. I figured my courses would transfer when I moved to Stevens Point for my husband's job. I was a non-traditional student and Dr. Agnes Jones helped to get me into the program. When I graduated, there was a position open on campus for an interior designer. I worked in that capacity until my retirement at age seventy-two. My education allowed me to work as an interior designer on campus."
