1953�Bob Hope hosted the first coast-to-coast telecast of the Academy Awards on NBC-TV.

Academy Awards
Polio Vaccine    1954�Dr. Jonas Salk-developer of the anti-polio vaccine, began testing his final version on school children in Pittsburgh. The serum would be approved for national vaccine programs the next year..
1956�Many school districts in the South defied the Supreme Court ruling that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. Many schools were closed down when federal funding was cut off for non-compliance. Southern Segregation
