n Saturday afternoon Miss Allen and the Senior Home Economics girls demonstrated,
the use of electrical appliances in the home, to the local Womans Club meeting. The meeting was held in the Home
Economics rooms. Miss Allen introduced the series of demonstrations with an interesting talk on an experiment
carried out by a Senior Home Economics class of several years ago. She compared the value and relative cost of the
following fuels: coal, wood, gas, kerosene, and electricity. Each girl then in turn illustrated and explained the
use, construction and operation of the various appliances and gave as nearly as possible the cost of operation of
each appliance. Mayme Cartmill had as her list of appliances the electric flatiron, fireless cooker, warming pad
and curling iron; Mildred Stratton the sewing machine; Frieda Lobeck, the vacuum cleaner; Irene Haan, the electric
washer and range; Rusty Withee, the ironer; Ella Hein the percolator; Esther Schlerf, the table stove and Bernice
Smoot demonstrated and illustrated the use of various combinations of these electrical appliances in use on the
table in the getting of a breakfast, luncheon, or dinner. Menus were planned for informal meals of this kind.
Due to the absence of Leone Wood, Miss Allen explained the use of the electric refrigerator. After the meeting
the women were given an opportunity to ask questions of the girls in regard to their particular appliance. A
very light lunch was served after the meeting. The Sophomore girls are doing their weaving work now.
