Stevens Point Normal Domestic Science Overview
he Home Economic Department welcomed 41 new majors in 1921, bringing
the total enrollment to 84, one of the largest departments in the school. Graduates were teaching in normal
schools, high schools, county training schools, and vocational schools, as well as working as dieticians and
demonstration agents. By 1924 these graduates were receiving salaries up to $1,800.

This decade marks the transition for the college from a normal school to a four-year state teachers' college,
changing the name from "Stevens Point Normal" to "Stevens Point Teachers College." In the transition, two
teaching degrees were offered: rural education and home economics. The first students to receive bachelors
degrees were from the home economics program: Mayme and Genevieve Cartmill from Plover.
